The Government of Ghana has formally lodged a protest with the United Nations following an attack on the Ghanaian Battalion serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in Southern Lebanon on 6 March 2026, which left two Ghanaian soldiers seriously injured.
In a statement issued on Saturday, March 7, the government said its protest, addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, calls for a full, immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack on personnel serving in the cause of international peace and security.
The government also strongly condemned the assault and demanded that those responsible be identified and held accountable, noting that the attack constitutes a grave violation of international law, amounts to a war crime, and undermines the protections afforded to UN peacekeeping personnel.
The government also urged the UN to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of Ghanaian troops serving with UNIFIL and all personnel who risk their lives daily in the service of humanity.
“The Government of Ghana assures our gallant soldiers that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice and guaranteeing enhanced protection. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their loved ones,” the statement said.
The Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under missile attack amid rising tensions between the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
In a statement on Friday, March 6, the Ghana Armed Forces said the base was hit between 17:45 and 17:52 local time. Two Ghanaian soldiers sustained critical injuries, while another officer suffered psychological trauma. The strike also destroyed the camp’s Officers’ Mess, which was completely burnt down.
