‘I need justice, not money’ — Ibrahim Mahama on Police assault claims

Renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama has stated that his pursuit of action over an alleged assault by police officers is driven by the need for justice rather than compensation.

The artist made the remarks after meeting with the Police Management Board (POMAB) on Thursday, March 26, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to investigate claims of assault involving members of the Inspector General of Police’s Special Task Force operating the “Black Maria.”

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Mahama emphasised that the objective of the engagement was to ensure accountability and transparency in addressing the incident.

“No, we are not looking for compensation. There is no way we are looking for money. Obviously, I don’t need that. It’s not about that. It’s more just about justice,” he stated.

He explained that his primary concern is to ensure that the circumstances of the incident are fully understood and that those responsible are held accountable.

“We just want to make sure people understand what transpired that day. Because we are all in the country, we are in a democracy. We want to understand what is happening and see how we can solve it,” he added.

Mahama further noted that pursuing justice in such cases is essential to strengthening public confidence in the country’s institutions, particularly in ensuring that citizens feel protected and heard.

“So that when other people are elsewhere, and things like this happen, at least they are assured that in the country they live in, their matter will be taken seriously and there will be some kind of justice,” he said.
