Farmers across Ghana will receive free fertilisers in 2026 following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, aimed at cushioning them against post-harvest losses.

The announcement was made during the launch of the first Farmer Services Centre at Takoratwene in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District, part of the government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative designed to strengthen the agricultural value chain and create employment opportunities.

The centre will serve as a one-stop hub, providing mechanised land preparation, certified seeds and fertilisers, equipment leasing, irrigation support, and post-harvest storage facilities for farmers.

Addressing attendees, President Mahama said the free fertiliser initiative will replace the existing subsidy system to support better farmers who have faced losses in recent seasons.

“We have procured fertilizers for our farmers, which are usually sold at subsidized prices. However, this time, I have instructed the Minister of Agriculture to distribute them free of charge.

“This year, fertilizers will not be sold; this measure is intended to cushion farmers against the losses they have incurred,” he stated.

The President also disclosed progress on key infrastructure projects in the district. He confirmed that a 3.6-kilometre bridge over the River Afram has been awarded to a contractor, with construction set to begin soon, and included the Adawso–Agordeke road in the government’s Big Push programme to improve local transport.

“Yesterday, my team encountered a challenge with the engine of the pontoon while traveling here, and it took the intervention of some fishermen to assist them. I had earlier promised to construct a bridge over the Afram River, and I am pleased to announce that the project has now been awarded to a contractor, with work expected to commence soon.”

Additionally, the Adawso–Agordeke road has been included in the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme to address transport challenges in the area.
