The Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, has dismissed a viral video purporting to show patients lying on the floor, insisting that it does not reflect the reality of the hospital’s emergency wards amid ongoing concerns over the “no-bed syndrome.”
Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, made the clarification during a working visit by the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Saturday, March 21.
Dr. Adam acknowledged an increase in patient numbers but clarified that while some patients may be seated on chairs due to high demand, at no point have patients slept on the floor.
“We are still reviewing the images to ascertain whether it is AI-generated,” he added.
Dr. Adam also noted that outpatient department (OPD) services have been extended from 6 pm to 10 pm to manage patient demand and reduce pressure on doctors.
Despite the surge in patient numbers, hospital management stressed that patient care remains a priority and that measures are being implemented to address congestion and improve service delivery.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh emphasized the need to expand bed capacity in wards to ease congestion in the emergency department.
He urged health facilities to stabilise patients promptly while working to improve overall capacity.
“I realized that there is the need for beds at the wards so that at every material time we can create space at emergency. For me, I think it makes a lot of sense to create an empty bed at the emergency than to say that the wards are full.
“I will also appeal to all the health facilities to this place to try to stabilize the person first,” he said.
