President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct a new runway for the Sunyani Airport to accommodate larger aircraft and boost air connectivity in the region.
The proposed project is expected to improve air travel access to the Bono Region and support economic activity by enabling larger aircraft to operate in and out of Sunyani.
Speaking during the Resetting Ghana Tour in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Mahama said the current airport infrastructure is inadequate, particularly the runway, which is too short to handle jet aircraft.
“The old Sunyani Airport has stalled. The runway is only about 1.5 kilometres. Because of that, planes that can land in Kumasi cannot come here,” he said.
Mahama explained that although expanding the existing runway had been considered, surrounding developments make it impractical.
“That requires that we expand the runway, but because of the buildings in the area, we may not be able to work on it. So, we decided to build a new runway for the airport,” he added.
According to the President, traditional authorities in the area have already released land for the project, and design plans are in place for a new 2.4-kilometre runway capable of accommodating larger aircraft.
“The chiefs have already given out lands for that. The design exists, and the new runway will be about 2.4 kilometres to be able to land any plane of any size,” he said.
He noted that the government will return at the appropriate time to officially cut sod for the commencement of construction.
