Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that the government has made a major financial commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system, revealing that over GH¢500 million worth of medical equipment has been procured ahead of the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare policy.

He made the announcement during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, April 22, where he spoke with host Bernard Avle about government’s preparations and broader plans to improve access to healthcare services across the country.

According to him, the investment is part of a deliberate effort to retool and strengthen primary healthcare facilities to ensure they are adequately equipped to deliver essential services at the community level.

He explained that for years, many lower-tier health facilities have operated with limited resources, affecting the efficiency of healthcare delivery.

“What we needed to do immediately was to retool the primary healthcare facilities to be able to deliver. As I speak to you now, we have bought not less than GH¢500 million of equipment to be distributed to the primary healthcare centres.”

The Free Primary Healthcare policy, which was officially launched by President John Dramani Mahama at Dodowa, is expected to significantly expand access to essential health services.

The initiative aims to remove financial barriers at the primary care level, enabling more citizens to access early treatment and preventive care without cost constraints.
