The Government of Ghana has begun a formal process to establish a new national airline, inviting strategic investors to partner in developing a commercially viable and internationally competitive carrier.

In a press release signed by the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and issued on April 28, 2026, the Ministry of Transport announced that a dedicated task force is leading efforts to engage potential partners through a structured selection process.

The initiative is aimed at creating a sustainable airline based in Accra, which will serve as a hub for both regional and intercontinental travel.

According to the Ministry, the engagement process will involve three rounds of discussions with prospective investors, after which a qualified strategic partner will be selected.

Government is seeking partners with strong experience in airline operations, management, and marketing, as well as proven expertise in route planning and network development. Interested entities must also demonstrate regulatory compliance and have the financial capacity to support the airline’s long-term goals.

Eligible partners include established airlines, their subsidiaries, or consortia authorised by operational carriers.

As part of the proposed structure, the selected strategic partner is expected to hold a majority stake in the new airline. The partner will also be required to operate a full-service carrier for long-haul routes across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia, and other destinations, while also running regional services with competitive fares.

The airline is further expected to include a cargo division to support trade and logistics, and to deploy aircraft and operational equipment within set timelines, with initial rollout targeted by the first quarter of 2027.

Interested investors have been invited to submit proposals detailing their company profile, relevant experience, and preliminary business plans. Submissions are due by May 29, 2026, and may be sent electronically or delivered to the Ministry of Transport in Accra.

The government says it reserves the right to accept or reject any application and expressed its readiness to work with credible partners to bring the national airline project to fruition.
