The Minister for Communication, Technology and Innovation, Sam George, says Ghana is seeking to learn from Zambia’s approach to reducing energy losses and improving efficiency in power distribution.

According to him, inefficiencies within Ghana’s energy grid remain a major challenge, with significant losses recorded during distribution, affecting revenue and overall system performance.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, April 20, Mr George highlighted Zambia’s progress in deploying technology to manage waste within its energy grid, describing it as a model worth studying.

He noted that Zambia’s ability to ensure a larger proportion of generated power is paid for and effectively utilised by industry offers important lessons for Ghana, particularly as electricity demand continues to rise.

“Zambia is doing a lot, how they have managed to deal with waste in their energy grid which is one of the biggest challenges in Ghana, where we have almost 30% waste in terms of distribution losses and in dealing with that, what kind of technology they have deployed to make their grid efficient such that as much of the energy they produce is paid for and utilised by industry,” he stated.

He stressed the need for Ghana to adopt innovative technological solutions to address distribution losses and improve efficiency, adding that collaboration with Zambia presents a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange.

Mr George further described the engagement as mutually beneficial, noting that the partnership would serve as a learning platform for both countries in addressing energy sector challenges.,
