A 31-year-old woman is in police custody in the Western North Region after allegedly severing the toe of her 9-year-old daughter as punishment for returning home late.

The suspect, identified as Vivian Anto of Sefwi Proso, is assisting police with investigations into the incident, which has shocked residents of the Juaboso District.

According to a police situational report, the case was reported on April 3, 2026, at about 4:20 p.m. by a relative, Stephen Anto, who raised alarm over the alleged assault.

Police say the incident occurred earlier that day at about 9:30 a.m., when the suspect allegedly used a pair of scissors to sever the right index toe of the child, identified as Diana Boakye.

The victim was rushed to the Kofikrom SDA Hospital, where she is currently on admission and responding to treatment, while police officers who visited the facility confirmed the injury during examination.

Investigators say the severed toe was retrieved, documented and preserved as evidence, as part of ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police have indicated that the suspect will be arraigned before court after the Easter break, as they continue with further inquiries into the case.
