President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Lyon on Monday, April 6, to participate in the One Health Summit, an international gathering that brings together heads of state, health ministers, scientists, and global health experts to address emerging health threats and strengthen collaboration across sectors.

The summit, which focuses on the ‘One Health’ approach, linking human, animal, and environmental health, is being co-chaired by President Mahama and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The event is expected to tackle pressing global challenges such as pandemic preparedness, climate-related health risks, zoonotic diseases, and the need for stronger international health systems.

Upon his arrival in Lyon, President Mahama received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from members of the Ghanaian diaspora.

A group of Ghanaian families living in the Lyon gathered to welcome him on Easter Monday, expressing excitement and pride at meeting their president.

Many attendees described the moment as symbolic, highlighting the connection between Ghana’s leadership and its citizens abroad.

The president is expected to deliver two keynote addresses during the summit. The first will be at a session on global health architecture, co-chaired by President Macron and the Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Following the conclusion of the summit on Tuesday, President Mahama will travel to Paris for a high-level bilateral meeting with President Macron. The talks are scheduled to take place at the historic Élysée Palace, the official residence of the French president.

The bilateral discussions are expected to focus on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and France, with key areas likely to include trade, security cooperation, climate action, and development partnerships.
