The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South, Ernest Adomako, has announced plans to raise the issue of recurring building collapses in Ghana on the floor of Parliament following the tragic collapse of a multi-purpose building at Avenor in North Kaneshie.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 7, has reignited concerns about building safety standards, regulatory compliance, and the enforcement of construction laws across the country.

The collapsed structure, located opposite the Ashfoam showroom and adjacent to Melcom Plus, reportedly housed both commercial enterprises and residential occupants.

The disaster claimed the life of one person, while two others are trapped beneath the rubble, prompting an extensive rescue operation involving multiple emergency response agencies.

Speaking to Channel One TV during a visit to the disaster site, Ernest Adomako expressed deep concern over the incident and stressed the need for greater national attention to be paid to the safety of buildings and construction practices.

According to the MP, the tragedy highlights the urgent need for policymakers and regulatory institutions to focus more closely on the enforcement of building standards to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“I was discussing raising the matter of building collapses in Parliament with one of our leaders and so definitely maybe on Tuesday, I will raise it on the Floor of Parliament for us to be more focused and pay attention to construction in this country because what has happened is very bad.”

The Okaikwei South legislator further appealed for calm and assured the public that security agencies were actively managing the situation and working to protect lives and property.

“I want everybody to remain calm and the security agencies are here to protect lives and properties and we are going to conduct investigations to know the cause of the collapse.”
