The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region has confirmed extensive destruction following severe flooding in parts of Samreboi and Asankragwa, with more than 24 buildings reported to have collapsed.
The flooding was triggered by the overflow of the Samre and Tano rivers after heavy rainfall in the area, causing widespread inundation across several communities and leaving many residents displaced.
Speaking to Citi News, the Municipal Director of NADMO, Elvis Koffie, said the flooding has caused significant damage to homes, properties, and livelihoods, although no deaths have been recorded.
According to him, the disaster followed heavy rains that swelled both rivers beyond their banks, resulting in floodwaters engulfing low-lying communities.
Despite the scale of destruction, Mr. Koffie said affected residents have been moved to safer locations while authorities continue to assess the situation.
“We have a safe place for them which they are currently living with their families,” he said.
He added that NADMO is working with local authorities and other stakeholders to provide support for affected residents and coordinate relief efforts.
The organisation has since intensified monitoring of the situation and is continuing emergency response operations as assessments of the full extent of the damage remain ongoing.
Residents in the affected communities have appealed for urgent assistance, including relief items and long-term interventions to mitigate the recurring threat of flooding in the area.
