The President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Dwumfuor, has stated that the association is not intimidated by litigation threats from individuals who assault journalists.
Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, challenged the GJA to present evidence proving her involvement in the assault on Cape FM journalist David Kobbina during her vetting in Cape Coast.
The MP described the announcement of a total media blackout on her by the Association as unfortunate and not reflective of the actual situation.
She threatened legal action against Mr. Dwumfuor and the Association, urging them to either retract the statement about the media blackout or provide evidence proving that she was indeed involved in the assault on the journalist.
However, Mr. Dwumfuor stated on Eyewitness News on Tuesday that the GJA was not threatened or intimidated by such actions.
Instead, he said the association would continue to stand by journalists and safeguard their rights and freedoms.
“We are not intimidated by this threat of court and all that. We are within our constitutional mandate, and no one can deter or intimidate us with this court issue. In fact, the court is there for everyone. It is everyone’s constitutional right to run to court if you think that your right is not being served right,” he said.
The GJA president said politicians needed journalists more than journalists needed politicians except in instances where, due to poor working conditions, journalists were forced to satisfy the whims and caprices of some politicians.
Meanwhile, Mr. Dwumfuor revealed that Ms. Koomson had called for a truce.
She is prepared to assist the association in bringing the individuals involved in the assault on Cape FM journalist David Kobbina during her vetting in Cape Coast to justice.
