The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership in the Volta region has dismissed claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some concerned youth groups that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo must do more to deserve an honorary doctorate from the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).
The Governing Council of UHAS is set to confer an honorary Doctorate Degree on President Akufo-Addo on Monday, July 29. However, the NDC and several youth groups have argued that this honour is undeserved.
These groups contend that Akufo-Addo has neglected ongoing projects at UHAS and therefore does not merit any form of recognition.
In response, the NPP Volta Regional Chairman, Makafui Woanya, held a press conference in Ho on Wednesday July 4 to refute these claims.
He highlighted numerous initiatives led by the Akufo-Addo administration that have contributed to the continuous growth of the health-focused university and other developmental projects in the Volta Region.
Mr Woanya pointed to the continuation of a laboratory complex and the commencement of the university’s second phase through a counterpart funding arrangement with the Chinese government as clear evidence of the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government’s commitment to the development of UHAS.
The NPP has urged UHAS to maintain its autonomy and academic authority, “resisting pressure from the NDC and its affiliated youth groups”.
