Educational unions at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are urging for peace in light of the ongoing legal dispute over the extension of Vice-Chancellor Prof Rita Akosua Dickson’s term.
These unions have voiced their support for the University management and council members’ decision to reappoint her.
Prof Mrs Dickson held the position of the university’s Pro Vice-Chancellor from September 2018 to July 2020 before becoming the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University in August 2020. Her tenure was initially set to conclude in July 2024.
On June 20, 2024, KNUST officially announced the reappointment of Prof. Rita Akosua as Vice-Chancellor for an additional term. The University Council, during its 282nd regular meeting, endorsed the committee’s recommendation to extend her term for another two years, from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2026.
Following this decision, Kofi Clement Ohene Asare, an alumnus of the University, lodged an injunction to stop the extension of Professor Akosua Dickson’s term, citing concerns that the necessary process was not properly adhered to.
In reaction to this, educational unions at KNUST, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of TUC, have called for tranquility and expressed their endorsement of the VC’s reappointment.
The president of UTAG KNUST, in a conversation with Channel One News, encouraged students and the public to maintain their composure and trust in the court’s delivery of justice.
A number of students also shared their enthusiasm about the university’s decision to reappoint the VC.
