A former Minister for Communications, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, says the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “abysmal” governance will make the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) return to power easier.
Speaking after John Mahama emerged flagbearer of the NDC ahead of his third attempt to be president, Dr. Omane Boamah said he expects the NDC to overcome issues that led to its poor performance in the 2016 elections.
“Because 2016 was unfavourable in the barracks, it stands to reason that in 2020 it is going to be the same but it is not going to be the same. And we believe that the reason it is not going to be the same is hinged on a few issues,” the former minister noted on Citi TV’s The Point of View.
He remarked that one of the reasons for his positive outlook “has to do with the abysmal performance of the [current NPP] administration.”
“The second one has to do with the credible and pragmatic programmes that we are going to put in place,” Dr. Omane Boamah added.
Mr. Mahama secured 213,487 votes representing 95.23 percent of the total votes cast in a field of seven persons during the NDC’s presidential primary on Saturday.
Dr. Omane Boamah held that Mr. Mahama’s victory in the primary must be a cause for excitement among Ghanaians.
“Ghanaians must be happy and confident that president Mahama is coming back to right the wrongs and restore this nation in the right direction,” he stated.
In addition, Dr. Omane Boamah said he has no doubt that Mr. Mahama is the man to lead the NDC to victory in 2020.
“This is a man who is loved by his people and the party and even as he was unsuccessful in 2016, people still continued to ask that he reconsiders coming back into active politics. The party has demonstrated that there is unanimity when it comes to our support for Mahama. And in that unanimity, you saw the competition that everyone wanted to show that we love Mahama and the NDC and we want the party to win the 2020 elections,” he added.
