St. Mary Senior High School has launched its year-long 70th-anniversary celebrations.
The launch brought together former students of the school from the 1950s to the present.
A number of old students including the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, the Second deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana, Mrs. Elsie Addo-Awadzi, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, graced the occasion.
The anniversary is being marked under the theme “70years of Holistic Catholic Education; Harnessing the girl-child’s potential for nation building”.
Delivering the keynote address, the second deputy governor of the BoG, Elsie Addo-Awadzi, called on stakeholders in the education sector to take a keen interest in the personal development of the students.
She indicated that developing the students properly plays a significant role in the type of leaders the country produces.
“How can we equip them with leadership and communication skills that give them a competitive edge? How can we provide mentoring and coaching to these young girls to help them grow up better prepared to face the world? These questions, among others, should guide in the design of educational programs for girls going forward.
“We must continue to build a solid ethical and moral foundation for our girls. Our future female leaders must lead with integrity and selflessness and compassion in order to be able to transform the nation for good. We must prioritize confidence-building in our girls. No matter how strong academically a girl is, without confidence, she cannot stand tall”.
Mrs. Elsie Addo-Awadzi also urged the students of her alma mater to seize available opportunities to prepare themselves for the competitive world.
“For you current students, I wish to admonish you to seize the moments that you have now. Take advantage of the opportunities available to you here and prepare yourselves to lead in the future. Gathered here among you today are distinguished women who were once upon a time in your shoes.
“Do not be fooled by big titles, by the looks and glamour that you see. What every woman here has become today did not happen overnight. It has taken decades of hard work, discipline, sacrifice, determination, focus and the Grace of God. With these qualities and by the grace of God, you too can be anything you want to be”.
On her part, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, also urged the students to remain focused on their studies.
“I wish to urge you to remain focused on your studies and to remember that there is nothing, absolutely nothing that you cannot achieve once you set your mind to it.
“Remember, that this age and time presents endless possibilities; and if you have any doubt, just look at us the alumni, who are gathered here in our numbers from all walks of life and from diverse academic professional backgrounds. Let our achievements be the starting point of your success stories”
The celebration continued to the unveiling of the logo for the 70th anniversary.
The alumni also revealed their official kente.
The Alumni of the school joined forces to build an e-library project for the school.
A fundraising ceremony was held for the project after which the sod was cut for the commencement of work.
