The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for the Okaikoi North Constituency, Fuseini Issah has insisted that the NPP government is managing the economy far better than the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
The NDC had accused the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of misinforming Ghanaians on the state of the Ghanaian economy during his town hall meeting last week.
[contextly_sidebar id=”idJKvWu3n9PFd9I4VxPTDG3vQ3ySBAnw”]But speaking on Citi TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, Fuseini Issah who is also a member of the Finance Committee in Parliament maintained that the economy has been on the right trajectory since the NPP took over from the Mahama administration.
“…All the indexes in 2014 proved that we going in the wrong direction. [But] In 2018, we were able to grow our economy by 8.1 percent. We are still trying to grow it further.”
“That is why we have put in place the fiscal development [team] to make sure that our deficits go beyond 5 percent per annum. These are measured to ensure that we don’t go into Egypt,” he said.
Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia had touted government’s performance saying that it has done creditably well compared to the Mahama administration in stabilizing the cedi against major trading currencies.
Although the Minority in Parliament rejects this claim, Bawumia insists the worst performance of the cedi under the Akufo-Addo government is far above the best performance of the cedi under the Mahama government.
Stop Bawumia from commenting on economic issues – Ato Forson to Nana Addo
Former Deputy Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson earlier called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to with immediate effect ban his Vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia from speaking on matters of the economy.
According to him, the constant and persistent fall of the Ghana cedi must be attributed to what he terms misguided comments by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He insisted that the only viable way to save the cedi is for President Akufo-Addo to gag the Chairman of the Economic Management Team, Dr. Bawumia.
“I will urge the President to restrain his Vice President because anytime he speaks the currency moves. You heard him talk about the likes of the judiciary and the court systems. What has that got to do with the economic management team? He had nothing to say. He was just playing with numbers. And again, you know him and his credentials of lying with numbers. You could see lies. Our worst is better than your best and you say ‘boot for boot’? This one is more like boot for chalewote”.
Bickering over economic figures needless’ – Casely Hayford to NPP, NDC
Financial analyst, Sydney Casely-Hayford has chastised the two main political parties in the country — the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress — for giving conflicting figures about the state of the economy.
He said the ‘noisy’ sentiments from both parties have not solved the economic woes of the country hence they must work to build a data retrieval regime to reverse this worrying trend.
“I don’t really care one way or the other whether the NDC disagrees with the NPP figures or the NPP disagrees with the NDC figures. We have problems, and those problems are showing us why we cannot get independent numbers for which we can have a reference point. So at the end of the day, we cannot sit down and make too much noise about [figures] it doesn’t make any difference to anybody at this stage.”
“……that your number says its 400, mine said it’s 450. And it is time for us to fix that problem. What is going on is that you have different parties who have their own control of the numbers are creating their own financial statements and projections”, he added.
