The wives of some men who sustained various degrees of injury during the violence at the Ayawaso West Wugon by-election earlier this year have petitioned the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection.
They want the Ministry to help them get justice for their husbands.
The women, who presented the petition to the Chief Director for the Ministry, Dr. Zakariah Afisa said their husbands, who were breadwinners have been incapacitated by the incident and unable to support their families.
They said the government must “appropriately compensate” the victims and prosecute persons found to have acted outside the laws of the country by engaging in the violence.
“We are pleading with you to ensure that this matter doesn’t become yet another case of ‘Justice denied’ judging from the exhibition of little interest in it and is accompanied by delays. We therefore demand criminal prosecution of those men who acted against the laws of our land as well as rights of our husbands and demand appropriate compensation for our families,” excepts of the statement read.
The women urged President Akufo-Addo to act upon the Justice Emile Short Commission of Enquiry which was constituted to look into the incident.
They added that the president must look beyond his political biases to ensure that justice is served to their husbands whose rights have were infringed upon during the violence.
“This issue should not be treated as one of the normal political phenomenon. Our husbands are citizens of the republic and as such are entitled to all privileges spelt out in the 1992 constitution which includes administration of justice in all families. Sir If we may ask what happened to the Emile Short Commission report?…Mr. President, our husbands’ political affiliation should not coerce you to depart from your position on human rights activism, since they are Ghanaians before their political inclination,” they said.
