Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwabre East Constituency is making a passionate call to members of the public and the general Ghanaian society to stop avoiding Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
According to Francisca Oteng Mensah, the continuous stigmatization of such persons will affect them psychologically and physically.
She made the remarks during fun games organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency on Easter Monday.
The event according to the organizers was to bring constituents together to exercise and give constituents the opportunity to interact with the MP .
There was also a medical screening session for residents and participants sponsored by the MP.
The MP said she was saddened that Persons with physical disabilities still have to be carried to access some buildings and facilities.
Speaking to journalists, Ms. Oteng Mensah said the decision to include persons with disabilities in the event was to encourage to participate in social events.
“Kwabre, I must say we have quite a number of Persons with Disability and with the current norm which is going on, they should not be left out everybody should be inclusive, that is inclusive governance. It is also a way of encouraging others who have persons with disability in their homes. The mere fact that they are disabled does not mean they should be neglected and relegated to the background,” she said
The Disability Act 2006, Act 715 which guarantees the provision of rights, accessibility, employment, transport, health and education for persons with disabilities is yet to be entrenched in the country.
Issues of empowerment, inclusiveness and equality have also become a challenge for Persons with Disabilities.
