Six persons, including a police officer, have been hospitalized after irate youth at Manso Tontokrom in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region clashed with Police on Thursday.
According to police, the angry youth in the area blocked the road to prevent the police from taking away some suspects.
The officers fired warning shots that led to the injuries.
Confirming the incident to Citi News, PRO for the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Godwin Ahianyo said the injured are on admission at the hospital under Police guard.
“The Police officers have gone to execute a court warrant of some suspects who have been accused of damaging to properties belonging to a mining company. They managed to arrest three other suspects. While returning, one of the suspects raised an alarm that they have been attacked by armed robbers and this attracted the attention of some youth in the village resulting in the scuffle.”
“The irate youth wielding guns and machetes blocked the road with metal bags and heavy equipment and attacked the police team, demanding the release of the three suspects who had been arrested. An attempt by the Police to dissuade the youth yielded no results as they became more aggressive and violent,” he added.
There have been a series of similar incidents in the Ashanti Region.
In July 2018, the Police and the youth clashed in one of the Zongo communities in the Ashanti Regional capital over the killing of some seven community members.
