The Ofaakor Divisional Police Command in the Central Region has arrested a middle-aged woman for assaulting her granddaughter at Ofaakor Gada in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.
The suspect, Auntie Aggie, reportedly picked a hot stone from a coal pot nearby and hit the young girl’s jaw with it over claims that she had stolen her GH¢ 7.
According to an eyewitness who reported the incident to the police, such assault has been regular.
The victim in an interview said, “my grandmother burnt me with the stone and told me that when I go to school and my teachers ask me, I should tell them that I took her money and she punished me….There was another occasion where she put my hand into hot water.”
The 8-year-old girl, whose name has been withheld is currently receiving treatment at the Kasoa Polyclinic.
Her grandmother had refused to take her to the hospital for treatment despite her condition.
The eyewitness who made the report to the police said he saw the little girl in pain in a cassava farm close to his house and after inquiring into the issue, he reported to the police.
Bismark Johnson explained that the grandmother of the girl on several occasions abused her and that had forced the girl to flee the house.
“She has been maltreating her for a very long time and the girl sometimes sleeps outside as a result of that,” he said.
