The Ghana Book Publishers Association wants the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) to grant it more time to prepare and submit quality textbooks for the new curriculum for Kindergarten one to primary six.
The textbooks are supposed to be introduced in the 2019/2020 academic year.
NaCCA had earlier called on book publishers and educational materials development organisations with interest in developing teaching and learning materials (TLMs) under the new curriculum to submit their resources to the council for assessment.
However, President of the Ghana Book Publishers Association, Elliot Agyare told Citi News that more time will be required to develop up-to-standard textbooks for NaCCA’s approval.
For example, he said the new books would have to be trialled in schools before their full rollout.
“The new curriculum with its completely new orientation and focus requires even more time if we are to get quality textbooks to meet the high standards required.”
“It is of crucial importance that the various processes towards the development of textbooks are not circumvented… Information gathered from our members indicates that a few submission have been made so far for assessment. The majority of our members are currently at various stages of development of the textbooks.”
The GES officially and publicly launched the new curriculum in April and offered the opportunity to book publishers to start developing appropriate textbooks.
Last month, 152,000 teachers nationwide partook in a workshop on the new curriculum ahead of the new academic year.
