The President of Sunyani East Rotary Club, Rotarian Eric Adu Gyamfi has called on parents to vaccinate their children against Poliomyelitis.
He was speaking at Sunyani East Rotary Club Polio Day held at Tanoso in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo region.
Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious viral disease which causes paralysis in children after attacking the nervous system.
A total of 595 children between the ages of 1 to 5 years were vaccinated.
Rotarian Adu Gyamfi speaking at the event noted that Rotary has been at the forefront of the fight against polio for many years committing resources and volunteer hours through community sensitisation and immunization.
He disclosed that through the efforts of Rotary, Polio type 3 virus is totally eradicated from the face of the earth. An Eradication certificate has been issued by the WHO to that effect.
He also noted that the fight is now geared towards the Eradication of the type 1 virus.
Four Community Based Surveillance Volunteers who had worked for more than 30 years towards the fight against polio were also honoured with citations they were: Richard Kyei Akomea, Stephen Boakye Bonsu, J. B. Nkrumah and Michael Bekoe.
The Acting Chief of Tanoso and Adontenhene Nana Kwabeng Panin and the Queen Mother of Tanoso, Nana Amponsah Boaa on behalf of their people received A 4 Way Test plaque to be hanged at the Palace.
A Certificate of Appreciation was also presented to Edward Boampong who assisted the Rotary team to organized the event. Over 1000 pieces of drinks, biscuits and toffees were shared to children in the area.
As part of the event,692 pieces of hand sanitizers were given to parents and children for the purpose of instilling in them good hygiene and general well being.
