The Chief of Nyinahin, one of the major areas earmarked for bauxite mining under the sinohydro agreement, Nana Amanpene Boateng Twum II, has charged government to ensure the drastic transformation of the area as well as the Ashanti Region as the sinohydro agreement has commenced.
The Chief also wants a bauxite refinery to be sited within the Atwima Mponua district in order to create more jobs for the people.
Under the Sinohydro agreement, bauxite is expected to be mined at Nyinahin, Awaso, and Kyebi.
About 70 percent of the bauxite is expected to be mined at Nyinahin alone.
Taking lessons from the glaring under-development in almost all of Ghana’s mining towns and communities, the Chief of Nyinahin, Nana Amanpene Boateng Twum II, is very much concerned about the impending activity in his area.
He wants Nyinahin and its environs to see drastic transformation once the implementation of the agreement has commenced.
He is also calling for a bauxite refinery to be set up in the area to create jobs for the people.
“I must say without mincing words that expectations and anxieties in this district, as well as the Ashanti Region, are very high. In fact, the Nyinahin bauxite deposit has been a thematic topic on several forums. It is seen as a cash cow to transform Nyinahin and its environs, the whole of the Ashanti Region as well as the Ghanaian economy. With hindsight and lessons learnt from Obuasi, Tarkwa, Awaso, and other mining settlements, our people are seriously monitoring the activities of GIADEC and anticipating that the project will uplift their living conditions, turn Nyinahin into a model city and bring about drastic transformation of Ashanti Region as a whole. We are all praying that the project will take off as early as possible to assuage the anxieties of all stakeholders”.
As part of the Sinohydro deal, infrastructural projects will be embarked on as the bauxite is being mined.
Speaking at a ceremony where the Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia cut sword for the construction of 69 kilometres of selected roads within the Atwima Mponua district, the chief further charged government to ensure the construction of quality roads that will stand the test of time.
In response to this, the Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Attah said they have put in place adequate arrangements to ensure that quality roads are constructed under the Sinohydro infrastructure program.
The Roads and Highways Minister assured that work would be ongoing concurrently in all 16 regions.
The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia noted that the initiative will help construct roads in all 16 regions of Ghana and boost economic activities.
“The exchange agreement between the People’s Republic of China and Ghana is to help us work on selected roads across the country- all the 16 regions to boost economic activities and livelihoods of our people. We are having it in different phases and we are just beginning the first phase.”
As part of the Sinohydro agreement, President Akufo-Addo on the 10th April 2019 cut the sword for the construction of the Tamale interchange project to begin.
In the Central Region, Vice President has cut sword for the construction of 30 kilometres of Cape Coast inner city roads under the arrangement. Earlier in the week, government also cut the sword for the construction of 88 kilometres of Hohoe-Jasikan-Dodopepeso road in the Oti Region.
The 69 Kilometers of roads in some selected areas in the Atwima Mponua district where about 70 percent of the bauxite under the Sinohydro agreement would be mined include 14 kilometres of Nyinahin-Kyekyewere road and 4 kilometres of Nyinahin town roads. It will also include 14 kilometres of Kwanfifin-Apenimade roads, 10 kilometres of Tanodumasi-Anansu roads, 10 kilometres Mpasatia-Abompe roads, 2 kilometres of Mpasatia town roads and 15 kilometres of Amangoase-Atutuma roads.
