Angry residents of Dzolo Gbogame in Ho West District of the Volta Region have torched a vehicle belonging to the assembly and destroyed parts of the assembly building after one of its cars allegedly run over and killed a resident.
The taskforce which was collecting revenue on Wednesday morning clashed with one Wisdom Dake who was said to have been owing the assembly.
When he could not produce the required money, his shop was allegedly locked up by the taskforce.
In protest, Wisdom Dake stood in front of the taskforce’s vehicle in a bid to protest the action. But he was allegedly run over by the vehicle.
This led to violent protests from angry residents.
The residents first attacked some journalists present before moving to the assembly where they vandalized property and set fire to one of its vehicles.
Some of the assembly workers have sought refuge at the district police station.
Man reports himself to police for ‘killing’ resident
Meanwhile, the individual believed to be responsible for the death at Dzolo Gbogame in Ho West District of the Volta Region has reported himself to the Police.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, the Public Relations Officer of the Volta Region Police Command, Corporal Prince Dogbatse, revealed that the individual, who is yet to be named, is currently assisting with investigations.
“Thankfully enough, the one who was responsible for this incident has actually reported himself to the police and is currently assisting us in our investigations,” he stated as he called for calm.
The police are yet to come out with a definite account of what caused the death of the resident, who has been identified as Wisdom Dake, because of conflicting accounts from the ground.
“There are bits and pieces of information out there but we need to refine it to give credible information to the public,” Corporal Dogbatse said.
