The Member of Parliament-elect for Buem, Kofi Adams, says pressure must be put on the Electoral Commission (EC) for the creation of the Guan constituency in the Oti Region.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Adams stated that the people in the new constituency should be given the chance to elect a representative for the eighth Parliament.
“Pressure must be brought to bear on them to complete the creation of the Guan district so that the electoral commission kicks in to go through the necessary process to get the constituency created,” he stressed.
“In this case, the eighth parliament that will be sworn in on January 7, though it will happen before the creation of this constituency when it so happens, they have to be given the right to be elect a representative which will take part in the proceedings of this eighth parliament that will commence from 7th January.”
It is currently unclear when the processes for the creation of the new constituency will be finalised.
The EC announced on Monday, December 7, 2020, that eligible voters in the Guan District would not be able to elect a representative for Parliament pending the creation of their constituency.
The areas within the newly created Guan District are Santrofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi.
The people of Lolobi and Akpafu have petitioned the EC on the matter and is still awaiting a response.
In a recent letter to the EC, they said the EC had “taken our guaranteed rights away from us, thus unlawfully shutting the door on us.”
Among the questions they asked was “under which Constituency were the Presidential election votes of Lolobi and Akpafu collated?”
“Even more pertinent, it appears votes duly cast and counted at the various Polling Stations in the Presidential Elections were taken to an unlisted Constituency Collation Centre and hence did not reflect in all published results of the 2020 elections,” he told Selorm Adonoo.
They had wished to be part of the Hohoe district during the creation of new regions but did not get their wish.
