The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George says he will be highly disappointed in the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if it fails to nominate a candidate for the Speaker of Parliament.
The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Monday, January 4, 2021, chose Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye to serve as Speaker of Parliament for the second time.
But Ningo Prampram legislator insisted that the NDC won the majority seats in Parliament and is entitled to select the Speaker of Parliament.
“As far as we are concerned, we are the majority party in the house, and by parliamentary convention, the majority party gets to nominate the Speaker of Parliament.”
“As a member of the NDC and of Parliament, I will be disappointed if the NDC does not nominate a candidate for Speaker of Parliament, he added.
Ghana has been left with an unprecedented hung Parliament after the 2020 polls.
In contrast to 2016 where the NPP secured a record majority with 169 seats in Parliament, the governing party’s representation dropped to 137 seats in Parliament.
The NDC matched the NPP by also winning 137 seats in Parliament, the highest ever proportion of seats held by an opposition party in Ghana’s fourth republic.
The two parties were joined by an independent candidate, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, who won the Fomena seat.
However, the NDC has refused to accept the results in some of the constituencies including Techiman South.
It insists its independent collated results show it has grabbed majority of seats in the next Parliament of Ghana.
One of the issues the opposition party is set to challenge in court is the alleged rigging in the Techiman South constituency.
According to the party, data available to them indicates that the NDC secured 50,306 votes against the NPP’s 50,013 with 919 rejected ballots.
