Members of the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association are urging the government to use funds accrued from plastic levies to invest in recycling plants across the country.
This they believe will help to reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment.
Speaking at an event in Accra, President of the Association Ebbo Botwe bemoaned why monies accrued from taxes placed on plastic manufacturers have not been put to any use.

“A complete plant that can really effectively recycle Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle to PET bottle will cost 27 million Ghana cedis, so if you take this money that we have paid, the money can set up about 26 of such factory across the length and breadth of Ghana, but these monies are sitting somewhere with government,”he said.
The Minister for Environment, Innovation, Science and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng last February said Ghana would recycle all of its waste to generate energy and other useful products to save the environment and also generate revenue.
According to the renowned Heart Surgeon, every form of waste is another raw material to generate energy and other useful things that will benefit the country immensely.
“We also want to recycle hard plastics which can be used again or to produce energy. We want to do E-waste or electronic waste management which is also possible and many other things apart from generating power, building biogas plants from fecal waste and so on. So we have a lot of things that we have lined up, and we will be contacting you the MPs in your various constituencies on some of the projects regarding energy,” he noted.
