Academic activities came to a halt at the Koforidua Technical University on Thursday morning as some students joined their lecturers to demonstrate against the university’s Council and its Chairman.
According to the lecturers, the Council Chairman, Professor Samuel Apori, has been interfering in the running of the school, something that is negatively affecting the institution.
The lecturers and students, who were clad in red, blocked the main entrance into the school amidst drumming and chanting of war songs, preventing council members and other administrative staff from accessing the university.
The Chairman of the local chapter of the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), in a Citi News interview, accused the Council Chairman of unilaterally extending the term of office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor who had completed his two terms without recourse to the entire Council.
He also accused him of failing to put in place committees for appointment and promotion as required.
“It appears the council is not being proactive on the issue of our promotions. We are competing with other universities willing take our members and promote them. There are other issues indeed such as interference and non-payment for some projects.”
“We believe that the council does not have the institution at heart, and so we are calling on them to be more proactive,” he said.
