As part of plans to reform inmates in Ghana’s Prisons, the Interior Ministry is set to introduce psychological and behavioural courses for prison officers across the country.
The course dubbed, ‘juvenile criminogenic behavioural training program’ will equip Prison Officers with skills to train and also transform the behaviour of inmates.
[contextly_sidebar id=”0ccdEOj08DeXdpElmAhCwMD1ki3XlFBo”]Speaking to journalists at the opening of a three-day workshop for prison officers in Accra, a Director at the Ministry of the Interior, Samuel Amankwah, said the Ministry expects prisoners’ reintegration into the society to improve.
“We are interested in the welfare of the child, we are interested in the fact that when you leave here you are better than when you came in. If it is successful, it will be integrated in into the training curriculum of all the prison officers, so that every prison officer will have a handy principle that they can implement,” he said.
According to statistics, 86 percent of convicts were aged between 18 and 45, making the convict population predominately youthful, hence the need to cater adequately for the welfare and training needs of prison inmates.
