The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), says it will appeal against a ruling by an Accra High Court ordering it to pay GHC 100,000 in compensation to some Twenty (20) former students of the Teshie based A-Z Preparatory and Junior High School whose papers were cancelled after the 2017 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The BECE candidates filed a suit against WAEC for unlawfully cancelling their 2017 BECE English language papers, without undertaking proper investigation.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MP1QTCZIpTcmF4Sk9zhWikhElD5TQtUJ”]The court also ordered the release of their English paper results within 30 days.

In a Citi News interview, Public Relations Officer for WAEC, Agnes Tei Cudjoe, said they might against the ruling.

“The case went to court and the judge ruled that the counsel should release the results of the candidate, but we are studying the judgement and we will respond appropriately. We do not agree with the judgement, but we are studying and we will respond appropriately.”

Meanwhile, lawyer for the applicants, Dr. Joe Attipoe, said the judge’s decision was based on the fact that WAEC did not give the students reasonable opportunity to defend themselves before cancelling their papers.

Proprietor of A to Z Preparatory JHS, Godwin Aaron Monyo, lamented the cancellation of the papers at the time, saying it dented the image of the school.
