Police in the Central Region have begun investigations into the death of a 56-year old private security guard.

Benjamin Ato Acquah, a private security guard with the Abura Dunkwa Branch of GCB Bank, was killed on Saturday by persons suspected to be of Malian descent, locally referred to as ‘Zamerama’.

In retaliation, the youth burnt down buildings and other assets belonging to the alleged suspects.

The youth reportedly set some homes ablaze

In an interview with Citi News, Central Regional Police PRO, ASP Irene Oppong said the police will work to bring the culprits to book.

She said “currently, the police have been able to put the situation under control and efforts are being made to get all those involved arrested. Developments will be communicated later.”

Background

Some youth of Abura Dunkwa in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District of the Central Region, went on rampage over the weekend over the killing of the security guard.

In retaliation, they burnt down buildings and other assets belonging to the alleged suspects.

Rev. Edwin Kojo Sakyi, a resident of Abura Dunkwa, said the deceased, Benjamin Ato Acquah, had told his wife that he had had a confrontation with some ‘Zameramas’ in the area, who had threatened to deal with him.

Rev. Edwin Kojo Sakyi added that, at about 7:30 pm, the late Benjamin Acquah, who doubles as a linguist, entered into the compound of the ‘Zameramas’, armed with a machete and threatened to fight them.

The men, as a result, fought him back, and in the process hit him with a club resulting in his death.

They subsequently reported the incident to the Abura Dunkwa Police, he added.

ASP Irene Oppong said when they got to the place, they found Benjamin “in the middle of the house, he was picked to the hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.”
