The Kenyasi Divisional Police command has begun investigations to establish how a 15-year-old Junior High School (JHS) pupil drowned in the Tano River at Ntotroso in the Asutifi North District of the Brong Ahafo Region.
The incident, according to reports happened on Saturday, 8th September 2018.
The river separates the Asutifi North and the Asutifi South District, and serves as a place of recreation for mostly the youth and children who usually find pleasure in swimming and bathing in the river when they’re returning from the farms.
According to the Police Commander, DSP Teddy Damptey Brown, the boy was returning home from the farm with the mother when the incident occurred.
“The victim’s mother identified as Joyce Animah, at about 15 hours reported to police that in an attempt to fetch water from the river to drink, the victim slipped and fell into the river. A search party and community divers were dispatched to the scene, but unfortunately, we could not save or retrieve the body, so we suspended the operation today”, he explained.
He said police retrieved the body from the river around midday on the 9th when residents saw it floating on the banks of the river. The body has been deposited at the St. Elizabeth Hospital at Hwidiem in the Asutifi South District.
DSP Damptey Brown therefore advised parents to keep an eye on the safety and security of their children to help prevent such unfortunate occurrences.
“I have personally chased children away from the water during my monitoring of the area, and I also suggest parents make sure water for the farms is transported in cans and containers,” he advised.
The body of the deceased has been released to the family for burial while the police continue with its investigations.
