Police in Accra are on a manhunt for a driver who knocked down a pedestrian at Spintex in Accra, and sped off on Wednesday, October 10, 2018.
An eyewitness sent details of the incident and the car to the Citi Breakfast Show team.
Shortly after the team announced it on air, a listener called into the show and disclosed that he had seen the said vehicle at East Legon.
The black Mitsubishi L200 pick-up, which was allegedly being driven by a white man with others in the rear seat, has GT 4619-18 as its registration number.
But speaking on the show on Thursday, Adentan Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Divisional Commander, ASP Benjamin Buxton, said he quickly alerted the appropriate police unit when he heard about the crime.
He said although the police have not been able to find the car in spite of the adequate information it has, it does not mean the driver will never be apprehended.
“Yesterday when we had the information, our control room alerted the police at East Legon and its surrounding to be on the look out because we have traffic management team at various intersections.”
“The fact that the vehicle has not been found doesn’t mean the driver will not be arrested. If there is any information on air, someone needs to do a follow up”, he added.
Make use of Police Emergency lines
He further asked the public to call the police emergency number 18555 because they are readily available.
“People are willing to call the radio stations other than the police emergency lines; but these lines are available 24 hours.”
Hit and Run driving
In Ghana, it is not uncommon to see drivers or riders not stopping after knocking down pedestrians.
Drivers seem to run away for fear of being beaten or simply because they do not have the financial strength to foot any bills that might come up as a result.
Although this is a crime, the practice continues to occur.
Laws
Section 3 of the Road Traffic ACT – 2004 (ACT 683), has to do with careless, and inconsiderate driving.
It states that “a person who drives a motor vehicle on a road without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding 2000 penalty units or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 5 years or to both.”
