Over 90,000 children of school going age in Ghana are out of school and are engaged in other activities.

Out of this, 3,588 comprising of 1,658 girls and 1,930 boys in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region have been identified to be out of school.

These children have been put into 32 classes within the municipality.

This was disclosed at a launch of the programme ‘’My First Day in Community Based (CB) Class’’under “Reaching and Teaching Out-Of-School (REACH)’’ to increase transition of Out Of School (OOSC) boys and girls aged 8-14 from gender at Gilisiya in the Nanumba North Municipality.

The District Coordinator for Plan International, Prince Michael Agbo explains to Citi News the project’s beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries include in-service teachers across the country as well as the district education officials that would be responsible for monitoring the schools.

“Tutors at Colleges of Education  responsible for training pre-service teachers will also benefit from the project and ultimately, the project’s indirect beneficiaries, who are students in Ghanaian schools, will benefit indirectly from improved teaching and learning in their classrooms resulting in improved learning outcome.”

The Municipal Director of Education in the Nanumba North Municipality, Amatus Tug-uu expressed his gratitude to Plan International for selecting the Nanumba North for the implementation of the programme and had assured them of his support and cooperation for the successful implementation of the programme.

He also promised to liaise with the Nanumba North Municipal assembly to provide Gilisiya community with a school block.

He, however, called on the beneficiaries children to take the programme seriously and to respect the instructors.

On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nanumba North, Abdulai Yakoub reiterated the called by the education director for the learners to take their learning seriously and added that parents should give their wards time to learn.

Plan International has been working in Ghana to support children, particularly the most marginalised, to exercise their rights for over 25 years. Working in 637 communities, the majority of which are rural, our work has impacted the lives of 480,000 children.

In Ghana, children, especially girls, suffer from violence at school and in their communities.

Plan International Ghana is a child-centered organisation whose work aims at empowering marginalised children, families and communities to break the cycle of exclusion, child poverty and claim their human rights and to realise their full potential of life in general.

Plan International also supports families to earn more money and manage it better so their children can thrive.
