Voters in most of the 47 districts in the affected regions begun queuing at their respective polling stations as early as 4am to cast the vote in the electoral process which officially starts at 8am.
In the Tano North constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region, Citi News’ Edward Oppong Marfo reported that the voting process started at exactly 7am with the process running smoothly so far.
Some residents who spoke to Citi News in the area were optimistic that the area will be carved into a new region at the end of voting at 5pm today.
Meanwhile in the northern part of the Volta Region which is to be called Oti Region, Citi News’ Macintosh Gratham reported that voter turn out in the Santrokofi area voter turnout appeared low with many young people in the town expressing disinterest in the process.
Two hours into the process, barely 20 people had cast their votes out of the expected over 500 voters.
Voting in the Chereponi area of the Northern Region is also ongoing smoothly. Mohammed Aminu Alabira told Citi News that voters begun queuing much earlier in the morning ahead of the official voting time.
Meanwhile the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), has deployed 50 observers to monitor the referendum.
The election observers say they will ensure transparency, accountability and credibility of the exercise.
Special voting held
The Electoral Commission on Monday, December 24 held the special voting exercise for some identifiable groups made up of security agencies, officers of the Electoral Commission and the media.
Less than the expected 10,127 eligible voters came out to vote in the process.
