Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, has declared the year 2019 as one for the rapid socio-economic development of the Volta Region.
He said the government would deliver on promises made to the region this year, and called for support from all stakeholders.
The Regional Minister, who said this at a press soiree organized by the Regional Police Command in Ho, said the government has done a lot in the past two years and remains committed to fulfilling all of its promises in coming months.
He commended the Police for the show of professionalism and efforts at fighting and reducing crime in the region.
Dr. Letsa also applauded the relationship between the media and the police, and urged them to continue to work together for the good of society.
Francis Doku, Volta Regional Police Commander, said with the help of the media and other stakeholders, the Police was able to reduce crime in the region from 1,133 in 2017, to 755 in 2018.
He said the figures show that the Regional Police Command was not sleeping on the job, and called for further collaboration to ensure safe, secure and peaceful communities for rapid socio-economic development.
The crime statistics showed a drastic reduction in child trafficking cases from 19 in 2017 to two in 2018.
Rape cases also went down from 47 in 2017 to 33 in 2018; and abduction from 43 in 2017 to 37 in 2018; and defilement from 273 in 2017 to 157 in 2018.
Abortion cases, however went up from 16 in 2017 to 58 in 2018; kidnapping from one to two; forgery, from one to ten; and robbery from 61 to 70 cases among others.
