The Techiman Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region has begun a demolition exercise to bring down all dilapidated structures in the Municipality.
Speaking to Citi News, the Techiman NADMO Coordinator, Eric Asiedu stated that the exercise began with the pulling down of some dilapidated public toilets.
“Our core mandate is to prevent disasters. So, we don’t sit down for disasters to occur before we help the person in the form of relief items. We carried out some risk assessments and we found out that, this is a public toilet and we need to demolish it if not, when it collapses it will also be a disaster. So, that is why we carry out such activities at places like Techiman. We will also assess some public schools because some of them are not in good shape,” he said.
Two months ago, the Assembly notified persons with dilapidated structures to pull down such structures.
The Assembly wrote to inform owners of these dilapidated structures in the Municipality including the one that collapsed at Twimia, killing an eleven-year-old child following a downpour.
With the recent flood situation on the rise in the country, there have been calls by stakeholders to prevent the situation by demolishing houses – dilapidated and abandoned buildings inclusive- in waterways as part of measures to curb the problem.
In June last year, a two-storey market store being constructed at the Techiman Market collapsed at dawn, claiming the life of one person and injuring another.
