The youth of Sogakope in the Volta Region have held a vigil in memory of the Sogakope South Electoral Area, Marcus Mawutor Adzahli who was killed last Sunday, March 1 2020.
Eight men wielding guns and clubs allegedly besieged the house of the assemblyman, shot and stabbed him multiple times after he reportedly struggled with them for nearly an hour.
The youth who were not happy with what they have described as growing insecurity in the area blamed the police for failing to attend to crime scenes when distress calls are made to them.
Subsequently, they proceeded to block the Accra-Aflao highway causing unbearable traffic on the road for two days after which they raided the police station and pelted stones at the officers on duty at the time.
The officers on duty fired warning shots in an effort to disperse the crowd leaving three persons injured.
The Police and the South Tongu District Security Council, Former President JJ Rawlings, Volta Caucus in Parliament and the NDC together have put a GHS 60,000 bounty on the heads of the assailants.
An opinion leader, Maxwell Lukutor, addressing the youth at the vigil praised them for standing firm to show their displeasure at the numerous violent crimes going unpunished in the area.
“I thank you all for participating in this vigil to remember our brother and all lost souls in the incessant violent crimes being committed in the area. I urge you all to be of good conduct but aid the authorities in unravelling the crimes going on around us,” Mr. Lukutor told the crowd.
So far, the Police have arrested four individuals with regards to the assemblyman’s killing.
