Three health workers of the Sissala West district hospital at Gwolllu in the Upper West region have sustained varying degrees of injuries after they were allegedly attacked by a person infected with COVID-19 and his family members at Gbal, a community in the region.
Citi News sources in the area indicate that the incident happened on Monday, June 22, 2020, at about 12:30 pm when the health workers, comprising contact tracers and rapid response members of the Sissala West COVID-19 response team, accompanied the person infected with COVID-19 to the community in a bid to reintegrate him after he was discharged from a holding centre at Tumu in the Sissala East district.
The Sissala West District Director of Health, Cecelia Kakariba who confirmed the development told Citi News that: “When they got to the village, the recovered person COVID-19 started attacking the health workers, asking why he was discharged in less than two weeks without being given any drug at the isolation centre.”
“Some of his family members also got to the scene and helped him to beat the health workers because they did not believe that their brother was infected. Two of my workers managed to escape and run into a waiting vehicle while one of them ran into the bush for his life”.
Madam Kakariba said the matter has been reported to the Sissala West District Police Command.
Meanwhile, the Sissala West District Police Commander, ASP Victor Akapko, in a Citi News interview said no arrest has been made yet.
He however assured that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators brought to book.
The Sissala West district recorded 10 out of the 32 cases of the novel coronavirus in the Upper West region.
Citi News can confirm that all the infected persons have been discharged.
