The National Identification Authority (NIA) has served notice that it will conduct a mop-up registration exercise in the Ashanti, Volta and the Oti Regions from 2nd to 16th August 2020.
This the authority says will enable all who were not able to register during the mass registration exercise to do so.
The authority was unable to achieve its target of registering 80% of the population as the exercise was widely hampered by logistical challenges.
Head of Corporate Affairs at NIA, ACI Francis Palmdeti, however, cautioned persons who are yet to receive their cards to desist from registering during the mop-up.
“We started this mop-up registration just when we had finished with the card issuance across the country. The reason why we are doing the mop-up exercise is to ensure that we meet our target of 80 percent of the registrable population across the country”.
“We were unable to meet that percent in any of the regions. So our governing board decided to do a mop-up. We started in some other regions but as we speak, we’re getting ready for Ashanti, Volta and Oti. When we are done with these three regions, we will then focus on Greater Accra, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions,” he added.
It is also expected that a total of 16.7 million Ghanaians would have been registered and issued with Ghana cards when the mop-up exercise is completed.
NIA commenced the mass Ghana Card registration exercise in 2019.
Some Ghanaians who visited the various registration centres to take part in the process had their hopes dashed following logistical challenges.
NIA had registered over 7.2 million people as of January 16, 2020.
