The Head of Local Government Service, Ing. Dr. Nana Ato Arthur has charged Regional and District Assembly Directors to support the government’s effort to ensure development in their respective Assemblies.

He made the call during an award ceremony to honour best performing Assemblies in the 2018 performance contract assessment.

“We expect Regional and District Co-ordinating Directors to support government’s efforts to make the Assemblies and structures below them more democratic by providing the right niche of leadership.”

The objective of the awards scheme is to deepen development in local governance and strengthen decentralization.

It also seeks to boost the performance of local municipalities for development.

Out of about 123 Municipal Assemblies across the country, ten of them came top in the ratings of the 2018 Performance Contract Assessment Ranking.

The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region topped the ranking while Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai and Tema Metropolitan Assemblies emerged 2nd and 3rd respectively.

This makes it the third time the Asokore Mampong Municipality has won the overall award since its commencement in 2015.

Addressing the various outstanding Assembly heads, the Head of Local Government Service, Ing. Dr. Nana Ato Arthur assured that government will continue to support the Assemblies to aid in the execution of their work.

“Let me assure you that the Office of the Head of Local Government Service will continue to provide you with the necessary technical support to facilitate the execution of your mandatory roles”.

The awards scheme was graced by the Chief Director at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, C.K. Dondieu, Head of Local Government Service, Ing. Dr. Nana Ato Arthur and the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Elizabeth Sackey amongst others.
