Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Friday, October 2, 2020, cut short his four-day campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region and headed to the North East Region to commiserate with victims of the devastating floods that hit three communities in the West Mamprusi Municipality on Thursday.
Upon arrival, he donated GHS 100,000 to food victims.
In an interview with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Coordinator, John Kwaku Alhassan on Eyewitness News on how the money will be disbursed to the victims, he said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for Walewale, Lariba Abudu together with the District Chief Executive (DCE) who received the money on behalf of the victims “are going to involve the opinion leaders in the community on how best to disburse it.”
He disclosed that so far, “80 houses have been affected, 980 persons involved, 58 houses totally collapsed and 338 rooms affected.”
“We are still assessing the situation as the flood is yet to recede in some areas,” he added.
Victims of Thursday’s flooding had cried out to the government for immediate assistance.
Four villages; Gaagbini, Dimia, Tinkaya and Banawa have been the hardest hit.
On Thursday, the villages were submerged in floodwaters following massive torrential rains that forced the banks of three dams to break, allowing the water from the dams to rush onto the villages.
Acres of farmlands were submerged while some livestock was carried away by the floodwaters.
It has been confirmed by officials of NADMO that a three-year-old child also died due to the flood.
