Congestion at Sunyani Municipal Hospital Maternity ward has become a headache for authorities as the new block being put up by the assembly is yet to be completed.
Beds and every other equipment provided by the Sunyani Central Rotary club to be used by the maternity ward have not yet been put to use because there is no space to accommodate them.
The acting nursing manager, Mercy Fodjour in a Citi News interview said the situation at the hospital is unbearable.
“There is always congestion in the maternity ward. When we get overwhelmed, we are forced to attend to the patients in batches, depending on the urgency of their situation.”
“Sometimes we are forced to put some of the patients on benches and floors, others come along with their mattresses. This is not the best.”
The Medical Superintendent at the hospital called on authorities to facilitate the speedy completion of the maternity blocks.
“We are in talks with the municipal assembly to see to the swift completion of the maternity block. We are going through hard times and need urgent attention.”
The Sunyani Central Rotary Club has donated various medical consumables worth GHS 178,402 to the Sunyani Municipal Hospital earlier in March 2021, to support the facility’s fight against COVID-19.
The items donated by the Club included medical goggles, carbolic soap, face shields, tissue paper, infrared thermometer, cotton, hair caps and parazone 500 gallons, examination gloves, methylated spirit, gowns, face masks and hand sanitisers.
