Some residents of Tamale in the Northern Region are calling on the leadership of the Ghana Police Service to take punitive actions against some police personnel who manhandled some residents of the area.

According to them, the conduct of the law enforcement officers is unprofessional and must be dealt with.

Videos of some police officers assaulting civilians in Tamale for alleged power theft have been widely circulated on social media.

Speaking to Citi News, the Presiding Member for Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, Mohammed Alhassan, called for reforms in the service.

According to him, the actions of the police personnel were distasteful.

“I was surprised that VRA in connection with the Ghana Police Service will take a decision like this and go to a community and even if there is somebody found culpable of stealing power from VRA, you unleash the police service on them and beat them in this manner and we are living in the 21st century of our democracy.”

“Why does the Police Service act like we are in some kind of a jungle or under a military dictatorship rule? What kind of Ghana Police Service are we having?”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has interdicted the said police officers for their misconduct.

According to a statement from the Police Service, the four officers allegedly assaulted residents during an assignment by NEDCO/VRA officials to arrest persons allegedly involved in illegal power connections.

“The Police Administration has with immediate effect, interdicted four police officers working with the Tamale Regional Police Command following the alleged assault of some persons in Tamale in the Northern Region today, Tuesday, September 21, 2021,” police announced in the statement.
