Vice Chancellor of the Takoradi Technical University (TTU), Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, says the institution remains committed to creating stronger Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) opportunities for the future generation.
This he believes, will enable students to confidently meet national and global technical human resource needs, especially in the extractive and manufacturing sectors of the economy.
Rev. Prof. Eshun said this at the 7th Takoradi Technical University’s matriculation ceremony, where 4,924 newly admitted and registered students out of 8,272 applicants were matriculated.
The event was held online.
Explaining TTU’s commitment to STEM, the Vice Chancellor said over 70% of the 4,924 students are for STEM programmes which is far above the national STEM average for technical universities.
“A total of 8,272 applications were received. Out of this number, 7,488 were offered admissions to read various programmes but only 4,924 students have so far registered… From the statistics, 76% of the admitted students are offering Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics related programmes with just 24% offering business related programmes. This is an indication that TTU is committed to creating stronger STEM opportunities for the future generation to confidently address national and global challenges”, he said.
While giving the gender breakdown, among other indicators of the matriculation, the Vice Chancellor said the Faculty of Engineering stood out as the largest faculty with 1,342 enrolments for 2021 to 2022.
“With our determination to increase female enrolment, it is refreshing to note that 67.4% of the matriculates are male and 32.6% are female. In all, non-tertiary matriculates were 226, Professional Diploma 631, Bachelor of Technology 1,095, B-Tech top up, 966 and Master of Technology, 8”, he noted.
While congratulating the matriculates for their admission, Rev. Prof. Eshun re-emphasized TTU’s vision to advance excellence in technical education.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank you for choosing TTU as your preferred university for your tertiary education. You should count yourselves among the luckiest ones, worthy to be admitted to the various programmes of the University … Always remember that your primary aim for coming here is to study, and I urge you to channel your energies in that direction. Remember that you were admitted to the university as an individual, and you will graduate as an individual. You are therefore solely responsible for all your actions”.
“The vision of Takoradi Technical University is to become a world-class technical university recognized for excellence, innovation and societal relevance. Our mission is to provide technical education, training, research and consultancy services to our students and stakeholders for the development of the nation and beyond”, he mentioned.
Currently, the Takoradi Technical University operates three campuses namely: Main campus in Takoradi, BU campus and Akatakyi Campus.
