Farmers in Larabanga in the Northern Region are lamenting over the encroachment of their farms by stray elephants from the Mole National Park.
An incident on Saturday, July 9, 2022, led to the destruction of crops on twenty farms in Larabanga.
The affected farmers lament that this happens almost every year.
Farmers and youth in the area say they may be forced to retaliate if such an incident occurs again.
The Assemblyman for the community, Amidu Karim, confirmed that the elephants have raided 20 farms this year.
“Residents are disturbed by this repeated occurrence. The farmers are appealing to the government to come to our aid and support the farmers.”
A farmer, whose team and cassava farms were destroyed, lamented his loss.
“This is my only source of livelihood. And we can’t keep seeing this occurrence. Government should do well to restrict the elephants to the park.”
Another farmer, Seidu Issahaku also shared his frustrations with Citi News “I don’t hunt, this farm is all I have. What will I do now? We reported the situation to the authorities at the park. They came to take pictures. We have not heard from them again.”
Meanwhile, managers of the Mole National Park in the Savannah Region say they are working to bring under control, the encroachment of farms by elephants from the park.
