Parts of the capital, Accra, experienced severe flooding on Thursday, May 18, following heavy rains that rendered major roads impassable.
The torrential rains, which lasted for about three hours and started around 6 am, resulted in vehicular traffic and submerged some vehicles and shops.
Areas such as Weija, SCC Junction, Lapaz, North Kaneshie, Achimota, Tantra Hills, and Ashaiman, among others, were heavily affected by the flooding.
Pictures and videos shared on social media depicted pedestrians struggling to access vehicles and navigate through the floodwaters on their way to work.
This incident followed similar heavy rains on Monday, May 15, which also caused significant disruptions.
The Monday morning rain persisted for at least four hours, leading to traffic congestion on major highways like the Ofankor-Kumasi Highway and Weija-Kasoa stretch.
Motorists had to navigate using a single lane as sections of the roads were submerged.
Residents living in flood-prone areas faced difficulties commuting to their workplaces due to the heavy rainfall.
Vehicles travelling from Taifa to Circle had to proceed at a slow pace due to the flooded roads. Frustrated by the recurring flooding, a commercial driver in Taifa expressed the need for authorities to address the situation by constructing proper drainage systems, stating that choked gutters exacerbate the problem and cause traffic disruptions.
Civil Engineer Abdulai Mahama attributed the frequent flooding on major highways to the irresponsibility of local assemblies.
In an interview with Citi News, Mahama urged the local assemblies to take responsibility and work towards resolving the perennial issue of flooding, emphasizing the need for proper urban planning and infrastructure development.
