The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has responded to the growing discontent among its customers as electricity bills continue to surge, with many experiencing bills that have increased by over 100 percent in recent weeks.
With many Ghanaians feeling the pinch of these soaring electricity costs, the ECG sought to shed light on the situation.
Laila Abubakari, the Manager of External Communications at ECG, explained the company’s perspective in a conversation with Citi News.
According to Abubakar, while some cases of exceptionally high bills may be attributed to unique circumstances, a significant number of customers are not fully aware of the impact that the tariff adjustments have on their electricity consumption.
“Since September last year, every quarter after that, there has been an increment. Now what customers do not understand after we made the announcement on the tariff increase is the actual impact on how much they will be paying for electricity,” she said.
To address the concerns of its customers, ECG intends to provide clearer information regarding the tariff adjustments and their implications.
Abubakar emphasized the importance of understanding how these changes affect individual usage patterns and encouraged consumers to seek assistance from ECG representatives to better manage their electricity costs.
“But when you look at residential, you might have a different tariff. There is a special load tariff; consumers will have a different tariff, and so if you are a residential consumer, and you do not understand how the increment of the tax affects you, you might think that someone is cheating you.”
As Ghanaians grapple with these new realities, it is expected that ECG’s efforts to educate and assist customers will help alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by electricity consumers across the country.
